Effective Communication –

Ever wonder why reaching your potential customers is so hard? Maybe this can help.

Currently, there are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. How many of those do you speak? Well, if you’re like most people you only speak one or two, but this doesn’t hold you back. In fact, you know exactly what you need to know and can communicate and flourish in your given environment with no trouble at all. But, imagine if you woke up tomorrow and suddenly everyone around you was speaking French. How would you get through your day? The truth is, you learned the language of everyone around you at a very young age because you needed to. Effective communication with those around you isn’t a choice when it comes to going about your daily routine. It isn’t a choice when it comes to your business either.

Ask yourself this simple question, does my business speak the language of the market that it’s in? The answer to this question is an important one, as your business, much like you, needs to be able to communicate effectively in order to survive. This means knowing your market. Who are my customers? What do I have to offer them? How can I reach them?

This is where good design matters. Good design involves speaking the language of the market. Using graphics and information in a way that appeals to your audience and communicates to them exactly what you are and why you are speaking to them at all. Here are some basic tips:

Keep It Simple

Have you ever had a really long conversation with someone who wouldn’t stop talking? Sometimes it can hurt us to use too much in the way of graphics and text when trying to get our message across. A more direct method such as, “Hey this is us and this is what we do” can be much more effective than, “Hey my business has been around for 20 years, we just bought new carpeting, and my dog’s name is Phillip.” If the message you’re trying to get across to you market is too complex, you may not be advertising the right message.

Know Your Market

We all know that meeting someone for the first time can be awkward. It can be hard to tell someone’s personality from the first encounter and often that can limit how much of our own personality we show and how well we communicate with that person. The same can be said of most markets. We need to get to know our market to communicate well with it and much like real associates, this can take some time, research, and the willingness to adapt if our first attempts at friendship don’t produce the results we would have liked.

Know Yourself

Perhaps the most important tip to good communication is knowing your own business. Who are we? What do we want? How do we want to be perceived by others? If you know your own business well enough to easily answer those questions, then you should have no problem confidently forging ahead and creating a connection with those who will help your business grow.
